This entire set is a case of people paying more for the wheels than they did for the whole car.

Import one of the last truly American-made cars, built to Euro-spec, from Europe back to America... still probably get fined, jailed, and car seized and crushed for not being older than 25 years.

Just because now I'm curious... From wiki:

On October 17, 2003 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the Saturn Ion Red Line, piloted by the GM Performance Division's "Saturn Land Speed Record Project" set a new land-speed record in the "G/Blown Fuel Altered" Class at 212.684 mph. This exceeded the previous record holder of 183.086 mph that was set in 2001. [14]

from Saturnfans.com

Saturn Ion Red Line LSR Specifications

Chassis: Steel space frame with tubular steel roll cage

Body: Steel roof and decklid; polymer doors, fenders, quarter panels and fascias; fiberglass hood

Height: 50.5 inches/1282 mm

Length (including parachutes): 195 inches/4953 mm

Width: 67.9 inches/1725 mm

Wheelbase: 103.5 inches/2629 mm

Track: 58.8 inches/1494 mm front; 58.4 inches/1483 mm rear

Weight (including driver, fuel and ballast): 3900 pounds

Engine: 2.0L Ecotec I-4

Displacement: 122 ci/1998 cc

Horsepower: 700+ at 8700 rpm

Torque: 575 lb.-ft. at 6000 rpm

Compression ratio: 10.5:1

Turbocharger boost: 22 psi

Transmission

Kinja'd!!!

: GM Racing modified Hydra-Matic 4T65-E 4-speed automatic

Suspension: Modified ION Red Line strut-type independent with coil springs

Kinja'd!!!

front; modified ION Red Line semi-independent torsion beam with air springs rear

Wheels: Budnick billet aluminum

Tires: 26.0 x 4.5 - 15 Goodyear Eagle Frontrunner

Brakes: Disc front and rear

So it's based on an Ecotec block for sure.

Most likely, they started with an Ecotec LNF and upgraded the turbo and internals. I wouldn't doubt if they used the stock block, though. Early Ecotec 4s were pretty robust.

Yup, I knew what class it ran in. Ion Redline didn't have a turbo it was supercharged.

It seems that the speed record car was actually turbo charged.

The stock sedan never did anything for me, but the wagon has a nice look to it. Lowered like that, and with clean wheels, it's really pretty.

But yeah, it's still a 90's GM product, with everything bad that comes with that.

Still, nothing that a couple of handling upgrades and an engine swap can't fix (except for the shitty interior)...

Yup! They also used Legacy wagons during the same time.

Strangely, though, they never offered RHD Vibes over here, even though RHD versions were sold in Japan (as the Toyota Voltz).

And a 2-litre turbocharged Ecotec engine would be ''pretty much'' bolt-on... right?

or a supercharged 3800.

Kinja'd!!! and 100 more > Twism
04/08/2015 at 18:39

Kinja'd!!!0

Probably not; did the Cobalt SSTC use a CANBUS or was it a standalone ECU? If it was standalone, then you'd only have mechanical issues to overcome (custom engine/tranny mounts, wiring for the gauges, transmission & throttle linkages). You may have clearance issues with the hood or firewall.

Or say fuck it all and shoehorn the 3800 in there, and torque-steer for days! You will have arms like a Greek god after a month of driving that thing!

Weren't these like weirdly quick because of weight distribution? I swear I read something about that in the past.

Kinja'd!!! Twism > and 100 more
04/08/2015 at 18:43

standalone, methinks.

But yeah, 3800 would be the most interesting choice... Or just go full-retard and shoehorn a Northstar V8 in there.

The 1st gen Saturn wagon was the heaviest of the 3 body variations, and it only weighed in at 2400-2500 lbs. That's pretty damn light, when you consider a base Civic now weighs in about 300 lbs heavier.

I don't know about weight distribution being a factor per se, but the weight itself certainly doesn't hurt.

It only puts out about 300hp to the crank, but it'd be worth it just for shock value.

This chart says 300 hp would get you up to about 175 mph. I think that's fast enough for a Saturn wagon.

If you have the funds and the inclination, I'd say go for it!

It's not so low that you'd scrape everywhere, it's not overdone... it's just takes a humdrum Saturn and makes it look damn smart.

Kinja'd!!! SlickMcRick > and 100 more
04/08/2015 at 19:23

I've found some decent deals. Lowering springs and 16" rims aren't really that expensive. I'm still up in the air about it but may as well do something too it since I'm keeping it a while. By the way only paid $800 for it and it runs beautifully. Performed a 400 mile trip and everything. Only issue is like with every Saturn they routinely eat oil like a rotary engine so just have to keep some in the trunk.

What kind of fuel mileage can you pull in that thing?

Kinja'd!!! SlickMcRick > and 100 more
04/08/2015 at 19:32

Kinja'd!!!1

It's an SL2 5MT sedan and it's decently quick. Also this thing takes turns at ridiculous speeds. Mileage wise I average about 25 City and 30+ on the highway. It also only takes $20 to fill up. I plan on getting a second car by the end of the year but I'm keeping this Saturn til it falls apart. It's a 20 year old car that just broke 120k on the odometer.
